Please introduce yourself.

My name is Khayam Orujov. I am an athlete, coach, and champion in Zurkhaneh Sports. I live in Baku, Republic of Azerbaijan. I have won titles at both the World and European Championships, and alongside competing, I also work as a coach in Azerbaijan.

How did you become involved in Zurkhaneh Sports (Pahlavani)?

I was introduced to the Zurkhaneh from an early age through my father's encouragement. The rhythm of the Morshed's drum, the values of Pahlavani, and traditional exercises such as Meel-Baazi  and Sang fascinated me. Gradually, I began serious training and fell in love with this path during my teenage years.

What achievements have you accomplished so far?

I have won the Azerbaijan National Championship several times. I have also earned gold and silver medals at both the World and European Championships. One of my greatest achievements is having trained many athletes who have gone on to represent the national team and bring honor to Azerbaijan in international competitions.

What is the current state of Zurkhaneh Sports in the Republic of Azerbaijan? How are the facilities and conditions?

We have well-established Zurkhanehs in Baku, Ganja, Nakhchivan, and several other cities. However, many rural areas still lack adequate facilities. In terms of equipment such as Meels, Kabaddeh, and Sang, the situation is relatively satisfactory. Nevertheless, modern Zurkhanehs equipped with proper ventilation systems and standard flooring remain limited. In recent years, the Government of Azerbaijan has shown greater interest in supporting the sport, but further investment and assistance are still needed.

Is the sport popular?

Among people who appreciate traditional culture and the spirit of Pahlavani, it is highly respected and popular. However, younger generations today are generally more interested in football, freestyle wrestling, judo, and modern martial arts. To increase the popularity of Zurkhaneh Sports, we should introduce programs in schools and universities and encourage Azerbaijan's national television to broadcast competitions.

In your opinion, what changes are needed to further develop the sport?

I believe the following measures are essential:

  1. Building standard Zurkhanehs in every district.

  2. Organizing regular competitions for youth and junior age groups.

  3. Strengthening cooperation with the Zurkhaneh federations of Iran, Türkiye, and the Central Asian countries through coach exchanges and joint training camps.

  4. Modernizing teaching methods while preserving the authentic traditions and values of Pahlavani.

  5. Providing financial incentives and support for champions and coaches.

We wish you continued success and extend our best wishes to all the Pahlavans of Azerbaijan.

Thank you very much. Long live the culture of Zurkhaneh and the spirit of Pahlavani!
